Military buffs will have a blast watching the artillery demonstrations in Fort Washington Park.

Fort Washington, MD, is known for the former U.S. Army fortification that has since been turned into a U.S. national park. According to the 2006-08 American Community Survey 3-Year Estimate, Fort Washington, nestled in southwestern Prince George’s County, is a town of 23,679 residents.

Those looking for apartments in Fort Washington will be pleased to learn that the town is close enough (six or seven miles) to the I-495 Capital Beltway to enable a convenient commute to virtually any point in the metro area.

But Fort Washington isn’t all work and no play. Besides proximity to the city and various metro-area towns, Fort Washington boasts a score of recreational attractions:

  • The town sits right on the bank of the Potomac River, meaning you’ll never be far from the water
  • Fort Washington Park, originally completed in 1809, affords visitors the chance to picnic, shoot hoops, or check out the Civil War artillery demonstrations that are held monthly from April to October
  • Not to be outdone, the 5,000-acre Piscataway Park offers a fishing pier, nature trails and hosts a number of animals you won’t find in the city, including bald eagles
  • Fort Washington Marina, a great place to launch a boat, and the Allentown Fitness & Splash Park, where you can swim, lift weights, play racquetball and more, round out the area’s aquatic activities

The town has one public and one private high school. For grabbing your groceries, just hit the Olde Forte Village shopping center. If you need anything else, you’re close enough to the Capital Beltway, which is ringed with towns that have whatever you need. So if you’re looking for a watery suburb within commuting distance to the nation’s capital, Fort Washington could be for you.
