Though the city covers just 2.5 square miles, Hyattsville features a dozen parks, including a large, grassy dog park.

As of July, 1, 2009, Hyattsville, Md., had a population of 15,604. The city sits about two miles from the Washington, D.C., city limits, so you know commuting there is a snap.

No car? No problem, as the WMATA Metrorail has two stops near Hyattsville on the Green Line. There’s also a MARC train station, so either way, you’re fine. The town likes to brag about its “front-porch communities,” where people know each other and are friendly to newcomers.

One famous high school in Hyattsville is hardly a newcomer, as all-boys DeMatha High School is nationally known for its basketball prowess. Heck, the rest of its teams aren’t bad either, with the school winning more than 150 championships in 11 sports since 1969. Public Northwestern High School is available for non-males and non-athletes, as well.

If you’re looking for an apartment in Hyattsville, you’ll find more than high school basketball greatness and the Green Line.

The town also hosts a number of festivals, a yearly performance of Shakespeare in the Park at Magruder Park and various other community-wide activities. One such activity is the Outback Steakhouse Summer Jam Series, which features diverse acts for your listening pleasure.

The town has 12 parks, including the aforementioned Magruder Park and Heurich Park, which is a designated dog park. So, bring Rover and Rufus.

Those who like fresh vegetables and fruits will enjoy the West Hyattsville Farmers Market, which takes place every Tuesday from 2-6 p.m., from mid-June to late-October. The neat thing is that every seller of produce at the market is required to have grown the food themselves.

And, I haven’t forgotten about citizens who detest fresh vegetables and fruits (I’m kidding). For you, there are three Giant Food stores and one Safeway. For non-food shopping, there’s The Mall at Prince George’s, which features Macy’s, Target and Leather Man (Stop laughing … this time, I’m not kidding). And, right next to the mall is University Town Center, which features a Regal Royale Stadium 14 Theater.

So, there you have it: Hyattsville is a good place to live, work and play, right next to the nation’s capital.
