Since 1911, the track in Laurel has offered four-footed fun for racing enthusiasts and casual observers alike.

Beyond what is arguably the prettiest name for any town in the D.C. area, Laurel, MD, has quite a few other things going for it.

For one, Laurel — with a population of 22,672 as of 2009 — has its own website, and you’d be surprised how many quaint little communities in our area don’t. The town even has its own motto: Progressio Per Populum, which is Latin for Progress Through People. Fair enough, let’s see how Laurel is progressing …

The renter searching for apartments in Laurel will be pleased to know that he or she is within reach of Washington, D.C. (21 miles), Baltimore (20 miles) and everything in between, so commuting to work is doable. In fact, those eschewing cars can commute too because Laurel has two Maryland Transit Administration MARC stations that run trains into Union Station in Washington, D.C.

Laurel is known for its racetrack, Laurel Park, where you can watch the ponies run to your heart’s content. Laurel also has more than 200 acres of park land, which includes open spaces, athletic fields, tennis and basketball courts, trails, playgrounds, and pavilions. There are also two outdoor pool complexes. The Laurel Department of Parks and Recreation also has an extensive list of activities for both adults and adolescents interested in getting in shape or just having fun – just check out their site.

Laurel Shopping Center (with a Marshall’s, Giant and Chuck E. Cheese) gives you somewhere to shop, as does Laurel Center, which features a Macy’s. And if that’s not enough, The Mall in Columbia is only a short ride away.

So when you add it all up, you don’t need to understand Latin or bet on the horses to know that Laurel is a swell place to call home.
