Fast lane: North Bethesda offers two indoor pools – the Quince Orchard Swim & Tennis Club and Westleigh Recreation Club – so you can stay in shape all winter long.

The folks at Forbes.com think North Potomac is something special. At least in 2009, they did.

And unless the Montgomery County town hit Steve Forbes in the face with a pie (not likely, as its lack of a major university campus kind of prevents that), it’s probably safe to say Forbes stands by their ranking of North Potomac as 13th on the site’s list of “America’s Top 25 Towns to Live Well” in.

And if you have a problem with the awkwardness of that sentence, you’re not alone. But that’s exactly how they title the article: “America’s Top 25 Towns to Live Well,” almost forcing me to end the sentence with a preposition.

Moving on … There have to be some pretty good things about this town for it to receive that designation. Living in the North Potomac area puts the renter only a few miles from I-270, and not too far from the I-495 Capital Beltway (eight to 10 miles away) and Washington, D.C. (25 miles to downtown). So, commuting to the city is quite easy.

At six miles away, the Shady Grove Metro stop is somewhat convenient as well, but like all suburban Metrorail stops, you should get there early to find a parking space.

In the 2006-08 American Community Survey 3-Year Estimate, North Potomac had a population of 26,039. This town screams family, laid-back and safe. If North Potomac had an actual address, Quince Orchard High School would have it, and what can you say about a town that has a middle school named after Robert Frost?

For recreation, North Potomac offers the Quince Orchard Swim and Tennis Club and the Westleigh Recreation Club. Though they’re both membership clubs, the former proudly states on its site that you don’t have to be a member to participate in its programs.

For essentials and restaurants, there is the Traville Gateway shopping center (Giant, Beale Street Grill, Potomac Pizza and more). Plus, you’re only a couple of miles away from Gaithersburg and many more shopping options; further still, you can always take to the great highways of suburban Maryland and find what you need.

Like a lot of Montgomery County, North Potomac is very green, and features Aberdeen Local Park, with Big Pines Local Park nearby. So, why not take the road less traveled and, well, move here?
