Numbers game: The U.S. Census Bureau, located in Suitland since 1942, is one of the area's largest employers, supporting over 4,000 workers.
Suitland, Md., located in Prince George’s County, is less than two miles from the Washington, D.C., border and about eight miles from downtown. Suitland has two Metro stations: Suitland and Branch Avenue, both on the Green Line. So, if you’re looking for apartments in Suitland, you’ll be pleased to know that getting to the city for work is quite easy. According to the 2006-08 American Community Survey 3-Year Estimate, Suitland-Silver Hill (Silver Hill is a neighboring community) had a population of 30,783.
There are four parks/recreation centers with the name “Suitland,” but none of them are actually located in Suitland proper. Instead, the town has the Bradbury Community Recreation Center. Go figure. What I’m getting at is there are plenty of places both in Suitland and very nearby to exercise, whether it be playing basketball, softball, soccer or just walking on trails. And, while there don’t seem to be any gyms in Suitland proper either, you can find some in nearby burgs.
For shopping, you have nearby Iverson Mall in Temple Hills, as well as the side-by-side Centre in Forestville (Target, JCPenney) and Penn Mar Shopping Center (Marshalls, Staples, Shoppers Food & Pharmacy).
But what Suitland may be best known for is something I keep writing about on this blog: population, or more specifically, the “counting of population.” You see, Suitland is home to the U.S. Census Bureau. So all of that annoying effluvium you see posted on various Web sites and plastered on your television screen to “Open your door to the Census Taker” and all that jazz, well, you can go there and personally blame them!
Now, that was just a figure of speech, a tossed-off trope. We don’t want you getting into any undue trouble or becoming a viral superstar for the wrong reasons … not on our account anyway. An e-mail or letter can turn the trick just as well.
