Think your apartment is small?
Architect Gary Chang lives in what amounts to a glorified walk-in closet: a tiny, 330-sq. ft. tenement apartment in high-density Hong Kong. But Chang’s humble abode hasn’t stopped him from thinking big.
Using a clever system of sliding walls, hideaway furniture and eco-friendly design principles, Chang has managed to squeeze no fewer than 24 distinct rooms into his flea-sized flat. The trick is that each room is literally tucked behind the other. Need to go from the kitchen to the bathroom? Just slide out that wall over there. Finished brushing your teeth and ready to go to bed? Push aside that other wall, and pull down the hidden mattress.
Among the two dozen rooms in Chang’s off-the-wall unit: a living room with a couch and TV, a full-service kitchen, a bathroom with a tub (!), his own laundry room and a screening room for films.
There’s even a guest bed … right above the bathtub, naturally.
Finally, tinted floor-to-ceiling windows ensure the apartment is bathed in natural light and, combined with the abundance of reflective surfaces, help eliminate the need for space-eating lamps.
