Best foot forward: Get out there and help conquer MS. Raising $125 nets you a free t-shirt! (sumeetjain via Flickr)

Every month we give apartment renters in the Washington, D.C., area fun stuff to do, and most of them get to do these things without too much trouble.

But some people aren’t so fortunate; they deal with debilitating health issues that make life hard, really hard. Now we’re giving those renters a chance to give something back to those who need it, a chance to Walk MS.

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society website, approximately 400,000 Americans have MS, with the number afflicted worldwide thought to be greater than 2.1 million. And it’s good to know we can help them.

The site gives a thorough primer on the disease. Further, here is an interview with National Multiple Sclerosis Society President and CEO Cyndi Zagieboylo.

Walk MS is actually divided into six walks in the Washington, D.C., area, so many renters have a nearby walk they can easily reach. Saturday, April 14, features the Bowie, Rockville, Waldorf and Manassas walks. Reston’s walk is on Sunday, April 15, and the capital’s event is on April 21.

Walk MS gives you plenty of ways to raise funds while walking. This is important, as there is no entrance fee for Walk MS. For bicyclists, there’s Bike MS as well.

Here is the site FAQ.

The walk routes range between three to six miles, and every walker who raises $125 will get a free Walk MS T-shirt. And yes, you can bring your dog as long as they are on a leash. Good luck getting your cat to do anything, let alone leading them around on a leash. Gotta respect those felines.

For the Renter, Waldorf’s Appeal is Difficult to Overlook

The big chill: With a full, NHL-size rink, Waldorf's Capital Clubhouse sports center gives budding Olympians plenty of space to work on their triple Salchows.

Remember the children’s book that became popular awhile back, Where’s Waldo? (It’s now a series of books.) Well, people will be happy to know that finding Waldorf, Md., is as easy as locating St. Charles, Md., because the planned community is technically in Waldorf. However, both towns are distinct enough to be counted separately by the U.S. Census Bureau. Located in Charles County, the town of Waldorf – according to the 2006-08 American Community Survey 3-Year Estimate – has 24,966 residents.

Waldorf is 23 miles away from downtown Washington, D.C., and MD Route 5 not only takes you there but to the closer I-495 Capital Beltway, as well. If you’re hunting for an apartment in Waldorf and you work in Washington, D.C., or anywhere close to it, you’ll be pleased to know that the commute is very reasonable. Another road that plays prominently in the life of Waldorf would be U.S. Route 301, which runs right through the heart of town and is where most of the area’s commerce is conducted.

Among the retail outlets along U.S. Route 301 are The Shops at Waldorf Center, which feature Chili’s, Modell’s Sporting Goods and PetSmart, while Best Buy is across the street on Berry Road. Of course, the Grand Poobah of shopping in Waldorf is the St. Charles Towne Center, which is anchored by Macy’s, JCPenney and Sears. Yes, you could say it’s in St. Charles, but guess what? We’ve already established that St. Charles is in Waldorf. So, can it. And, yes, there are several restaurants and grocery stores in Waldorf, even a Sam’s Club.

Another good thing about living in southern Maryland is that there are plenty of recreation opportunities. In Waldorf, you have the Potomac River to your west/southwest and the Patuxent River to your southeast, with plenty of marinas all within a short drive. Cedarville State Forest bridges Charles and Prince George’s Counties, and it features swampland, hiking, biking and equestrian trails, campgrounds and picnicking. There is a $3 charge per vehicle, plus a little more for buses and out-of-staters. But that’s OK; when you move here, you’ll be in state.

The Capital Clubhouse, another recreation hot spot, has nothing to do with rivers, swamps or horses. Rather, the Clubhouse is all about sports, including volleyball, basketball, futsal and hockey. There’s even the Extreme Baseball 24-7 clinic. Plus, you can participate in both leagues and drop-in games for each sport. Less competitive activities include ice skating and rock climbing. Check the website, and call for specifics. Lastly, there’s also a 24-hour (during the week) World Gym Express located on-site.

As you can see, there are many reasons to consider making Waldorf your next home.
