What’s Thanksgiving without a parade?
While not as well-known as the moving colossus in New York City, the Washington, D.C., area does have a spectacle of its own: the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade, which takes place this year on Saturday, November 19 from 10 a.m. to noon in downtown Silver Spring near Fenton Street and Ellsworth Drive.
Since this is the only major Thanksgiving parade in the metro area, you might as well come out and support it, civic pride and all.

Parade watchers will be treated to the Washington Redskins Marching Band (and who knows how the topsy-turvy team will be sitting come Thanksgiving time), huge balloons, holiday floats, beauty queens, high school marching bands, cultural dancers, clowns, mounted police, fire engines and Santa Claus!
How’s that for a lineup?
Yeah, so it’s not the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. But two salient points: First, that parade’s in New York. Second, it’s on Thanksgiving Day.
Here, you get to come out and not worry about the turkey. But don’t let that stop you from stuffing yourself. You can always mosey on down to the Potbelly Sandwich Shop at 917 Ellsworth Drive and gobble down a turkey sandwich afterward.
This year’s event will be emceed by meteorologist Brian van de Graaff from ABC 7/WJLA-TV and televised live on NewsChannel 8.
There’s a lot to do in downtown Silver Spring, and it may well be your next home. So come out on the 19th, take in the parade, and have a look around and see if the area suits you.
