Choosing the Right Cat
Article by: S. Carson
There are many things to consider before bringing a new pet home. The kinds of things you already have at home and the new cat’s personality age and appearance are all important facts to be considered. Cats crave and require love and companionship.
Cats have many different personalities. Some meow for special attention and others will gaze at you with an air of superiority. Which personality do you want in your new pet? Be sure to pick a cat who is healthy, active, playful and alert. Many cats do not like to be held. Picking up a cat, holding him and stroking his coat will give you insight to how affectionate the cat will be with you.
What level of maturity are you looking for? As a general rule, kittens are full of energy and adult cats are more relaxed. Kittens are going to need much more of your attention and training. Young children usually don’t do well with young kittens. A cat who is at least four months old is a better choice for a home with young children.
Cats can have short hair, long hair, fluffy coats or dense coats. The decision should be based on how much time you are willing to devote to grooming. Long haired cats require daily brushing to be mat-free. Short haired cats also require brushing, but less frequently. Many cats will enjoy the brushing and grooming.
Do you already own a dog or a cat and are wondering if you can add another animal to your household? The good news is cats can get along with other cats and some dogs can get along with cats. The best thing to do is to have patience and allow a period of adjustment. Isolating your new pet to a room alone in the beginning is a way to ease the new pet into the existing family. Try short supervised meetings with the pets each day. Increase the length of time the pets visit each day. With patience on your part, some will become the best of buddies.
As a final note, remember you are making a lifetime commitment to love and care for your new pet. This could mean 10, 15, or even 20 years. Choose your new pet carefully and in no time at all, you will know how wonderful being a pet owner can be.
