Planning a Project

Planning can make or break a project. Once you have defined a project, established the project objective and chosen a strategy for achieving the objective, follow this checklist to plan the project.

Break the Project Down Into Steps or Units

1. Set performance standards for each step or unit.

2. Set project specifications for each step or unit listing the:

  • Materials needed
  • Tests to be performed
  • Standards to be met

3. Set a schedule for sequence and times for each step and list:

  • How long each step will take
  • How soon a step can be started
  • The time by which a step must be started

4. Set a budget for each step and for the entire project which includes:

  • Materials
  • Labor
  • Overhead
  • Equipment rental
  • General and administrative costs
  • Profit, if applicable

5. Determine staff requirements keeping in mind the:

  • Number of positions
  • Kinds of positions
  • Duties and responsibilities of each team member
  • Training requirements for project team members

6. Develop necessary policies and procedures.
