Description
Alexandria City is an independent city located in the Fairfax County area but not under any county jurisdiction. Historically, Alexandria was a tobacco and wheat porting town and named after settler John Alexander. Alexandria was previously a part of Washington DC. However, residents petitioned for the city to return to Virginia in the mid 1800s.Encompassing 15.75 square miles, Alexandria's concentration of technology operations ranks as second in Northern Virginia and is popular for being a corporate headquarters for national and international corporations. Big names such as PBS, Time Life and Microdyne are headquartered here. The area's downtown, Old Town Alexandria, is a beautiful neighborhood with shopping, historic architecture and cobblestone streets (Livingston, 2002).
For those who are on the artistic side, they can visit the Torpedo Factory Art Center, which was a former World War I and II torpedo factory, now an artist studio. Community festivities include Seaport Day and Festival of Arts. An interesting tidbit of information is that one of Alexandria's public schools, T.C. Williams, and its football coach Herman Boone, were featured in the 2000 movie "Remember the Titans".
