Since Ashburn is an unincorporated area, there is no official census data for Ashburn. Farmwell and Farmville were a couple of names which Ashburn held before the official name. The Ashburn name took hold when in 1896 lightning struck an ash tree and burned for a week. The phenomenon became so popular that people came to see the "burning tree" (Gadziemski, 2004). Ashburn lies about 30 miles west of Washington DC and is under Loudoun County jurisdiction. The area is home to the George Washington University VA Campus, National Crash Analysis Center, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and also the MCI World headquarters. Points of interest include the Old Dominion Brewing Company--which offers tours, taste samples and festivals.
