City List

Description

Capitol Heights was founded by Otway B. Zantzinger, a Baltimore resident. Around 1904, Zantzinger realized that people preferred living on the outskirts rather than in an overcrowded, congested city. Zantzinger advertised an electric railway, spring drinking water and no interest/no landlord when buying properties. Although Zantzinger proposed all of these amenities for the city, it was apparent that it wasn't going to happen any time soon and he needed help.

Residents voted to incorporate their town in 1910. Incorporation meant that the state would allow the town to have the authority to govern itself, thus to be able to establish fire departments, schools and other services. Today, Capitol Heights lies just 7 miles east of Washington DC, providing easy access to I-95 and I-495. Capitol Heights is serviced by the Metro train station.

County Description

Formed in 1696, Prince George's County is a suburban county that spans 487 square miles and lies just 37 miles south of Baltimore. The county was named after Prince George of Denmark, and was created from parts of Charles and Calvert Counties.

Prince George's County has many apartment communities available, which are convenient to both higher education and major employment opportunities. Nearby colleges include Bowie State University, Capitol College, Prince George's Community College, Strayer University, and the University of Maryland (UMD). Employment can be found in both the transportation and trade sectors, and the area has a large number of technological firms. Washington DC is just minutes away too, which makes Prince George's County a convenient location to live if you work in DC.

Major points of interest include the Washington Redskins' FedEx Field, BET Sound Stage, Andrews Air Force Base, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the USDA Research Center. Recreational areas range from several shopping town centers to acres of parklands.
