Geographically, Frederick, MD lies southeast of Hagerstown, on the Monacacy Valley on Carroll Creek.  Frederick was a processing center of numerous goods and equipment and thus a rendezvous point for soldiers during the Civil War.

The city was known for Fort Detrick's Biological Warfare Laboratory during World War II. In the 1970s, warfare research was later stopped and it is today a cancer research facility.

Frederick is a town full of history and charm. Visitors and residents can visit the downtown district to shop, dine and have entertainment. The historic district has a number of shops, restaurants and eateries as well as museums.

A major attraction in the city is the Community Bridge--a plain concrete bridge which was painted into a beautiful stone bridge using trompe l'oeil ("deceive the eye") techniques. The mural project, completed with a large group of volunteers and artists, cost about $300,000 and took 5 years to complete.

Other points of interest include the Frederick Baseball team, Baker Park, Carroll Creek and the Weinberg Center for the Arts. Community activities and events include the Beyond the Gates Garden Tour, Summer Concert Series, Summerfest Family Theatre, July 4th Celebration, In The Street Entertainment, and The Holidays events.
