Description
Fort Washington is a 13.6 square mile town located south of Washington DC along the east coast of the Potomac River. Although the area is not incorporated, Fort Washington is defined as a census designated place by the US Census Bureau. To the west of the town is the 341 acre Fort Washington Park, which harbors the historic Fort Washington overlooking the Potomac River. The fort, completed in 1809, served as a part of the Harbor Defenses of Washington DC.
However, during the British-American War, the fort was destroyed by its own garrison to prevent the British from capturing it. The fort was later rebuilt in 1824 and remodeled by the 1840s. The fort stayed in use up until 1946, through World War II. Today, visitors can go to the park to view exhibits and artillery demonstrations as well as hike, camp, bike and fish.
