Historically, Greenbelt was developed as the result of Franklin D Roosevelt's Resettlement Administration during the Depression. The aim was to provide jobs and planned communities with affordable housing.
Greenbelt is also home to the Goddard Space Flight Center and has the largest public (also science and technology magnet) school in Maryland. The NASA-Goddard Visitor's Center offers tours, exhibits, interactive presentations and a behind-the-scenes look at NASA. Community activities include the Festival of Lights and the Greenbelt New Year.
