Incorporated in 1953, New Carrollton was named after one of Maryland's early leaders, John Carroll of Carrollton. Carroll was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and one of the nation's first Senators from Maryland. Today, New Carrollton lies just off I-495 and Route 50, allowing convenient access to Washington DC, Northern Virginia and parts of Maryland. Public transportation is also provided via MARC and Metro trains. New Carrollton covers about 1.5 square miles with parks, shopping centers, schools and 25 miles of residential roads.
