Description

The village of Oxon Hill was named for a 17th century estate. Thomas Addison built Oxon Hill House in the mid 18th century; however, the estate was later burned in the late 1800s. The National Park Service oversees the actual Oxon Hill Farm. A major point of interest is nearby Oxon Cove Park and Fort Foote Park--which was a fort during the Civil War. History buffs and tourists can view Civil War cannons and earthworks at the park.

County Description

Formed in 1696, Prince George's County is a suburban county that spans 487 square miles and lies just 37 miles south of Baltimore. The county was named after Prince George of Denmark, and was created from parts of Charles and Calvert Counties.

Prince George's County has many apartment communities available, which are convenient to both higher education and major employment opportunities. Nearby colleges include Bowie State University, Capitol College, Prince George's Community College, Strayer University, and the University of Maryland (UMD). Employment can be found in both the transportation and trade sectors, and the area has a large number of technological firms. Washington DC is just minutes away too, which makes Prince George's County a convenient location to live if you work in DC.

Major points of interest include the Washington Redskins' FedEx Field, BET Sound Stage, Andrews Air Force Base, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the USDA Research Center. Recreational areas range from several shopping town centers to acres of parklands.
