Description
Built in the 1960s, Reston was developed as a planned community. The name Reston comes from the designer Robert E. Simon's initials--RES. Residents are considered members of the Reston Association and therefore pay dues to maintain the multitude of parks, bridges, lakes, trails and education programs in Reston. Reston is also known for being a mecca for internet and technology companies.
In fact, Reston comes in second after Silicon Valley, California, in having the highest concentration of technology companies. As much as half of the world's internet traffic passes through Reston each day. Community-wise, residents can gather and shop at the popular Reston Town Center, which has a number of shops, restaurants and an outdoor pavilion that turns into an ice-skating rink in the winter. A popular annual community event is the Reston Festival, which occurs each July.
