Description
Begun in the 1960s, the carefully planned community of St. Charles spans 9,100 acres, offering lots of open space, schools, residential areas, commercial areas and industrial areas. The area is about 15 minutes from DC's beltway and 30 minutes from Capitol Hill. St. Charles is composed of five villages: Wooded Glen, Piney Reach, Fairway, Smallwood and Westlake.
Wooded Glen, situated on southwestern side of town, is mainly composed of open space and residential area. To the east is Piney Reach, with a large portion of the land going to businesses and the industrial sector. To the north of Wooded Glen and Piney Reach is Fairway, which has residential, office/commercial areas and a golf course. The Smallwood area is one of the busiest parts of the city; the area has a number of schools, residential areas, industrial areas and town centers. Westlake is another busy district with a number of town centers, schools, residential areas and a few business and industrial areas.
County Description
Also referred to as Old Charles County, Charles County was created in 1658 and was named for the third Lord Baltimore Charles Calvert.
The area spans 643 square miles with about 28 percent being water. The county spans 458 square miles and is situated in the southern part of Maryland along the Potomac River.
Businesses and industries are making an effort to move here due to the low costs in land and taxes. The area is also home to the Naval Surface Warfare Center and Southern Maryland Oil.
In Charles County most employment comes from the retail trade and services area. The county also boasts nine county parks, three state parks and four national wildlife areas.
