Why Bladensburg Could be Your Next Hometown
Established in 1742, Bladensburg was a major seaport along the Anacostia River until the river had silted up and big ships could not reach port. Bladensburg was named for William Bladen, who was a Secretary of the Province in the late 1600s.
The area is also known for being site of the Battle of Bladensburg during the War of 1812 (also known as British-American War). In fact, Bladensburg was the only town in the US successfully invaded by another country. During the war, the British invaded Bladensburg, traveled along the Anacostia River to Washington DC and burned the Capitol and White House. The First Lady Dolley Madison was able to escape out of the city with the Constitution in her baggage of clothes.
Today, Bladensburg is a suburban community, just 5 miles northeast of Washington DC and 23 miles from Annapolis.
