Why Capitol Heights Could be Your Next Hometown

Capitol Heights lies just seven miles east of Washington DC, with easy access to major highways I-295, I-95 and I-495. Public transportation is serviced by the nearby Capitol Heights Metro train station as well as a number of bus options. With it's close proximity to the DC/MD border, commuters can easily access employment, shopping and entertainment opportunities within the District.

Capitol Heights was founded when Otway B. Zantzinger, a Baltimore resident, acquired acres of land just east of Washington DC. During the 1900s, the district was going through expansive growth as well as residential congestion. Zantzinger, realizing that living on the outskirts was appealing to prospective residents, purchased the land for residential and commercial use.

To attract new residents, Zantzinger advertised an electric railway, spring drinking water and no interest/no landlord when buying properties. Although Zantzinger proposed all of these amenities for the city, much of it was not readily available. Thus, the residents realized that they needed help to make Zantzinger's vision come true. The residents voted to incorporate their town in 1910, which meant that that the state would allow the town to have the authority to govern itself, thus to be able to establish organizations such as fire departments, schools and other services.
