Why Columbia Could be Your Next Hometown

Named for Columbia Pike, Columbia is a planned community developed by James Rouse of Rouse Company. The area's 14,000 acres was divided into ten self-contained villages, sprawling out of farmland during the 1960s. The aim of the "village" approach in the development of Columbia was to create a small-town environment - each village with its own shopping centers and recreational areas.

Columbia has various housing types available - from apartments, townhomes, single family homes, and condominiums. Schools, worship facilities, retail options and cultural facilities are plentiful. Locals and residents can enjoy a number of parkland, open spaces, shopping and recreational areas. Three lakes - Lake Kittamaqundi, Lake Elkhorn, and Wilde Lake allows for many aquatic activities such as fishing, sailing and boating. The many parks and rec centers have walking/jogging trails, playgrounds and tot lots for families to enjoy.

The regional Columbia Mall has many shops, restaurants and movie theaters. The Merriweather Post Pavilion serves as an outdoor venue for major performances and concerts. Students can commute to the two nearby major schools - Howard Community College and the Lincoln Technical Institute, along with many other schools in nearby areas.
