Founded in 1748, Frederick County was created from parts of Prince George's and Baltimore County. Its name comes from the sixth and last Lord Baltimore, Frederick Calvert. About 28 years later, the County was split into three counties: the western part became Washington County, the eastern part became Montgomery County and the center stayed Frederick County.
Today, the county spans 663 square miles of land with the Monocacy River cutting right down the middle. Since about 64% of the land is being used for farming and agriculture, it's not surprising that the area is known for its unpolluted air, open space and stress-free lifestyle. The county's seat, Frederick, is known for its antiques, art and historic charm.
The county is home to over 4,000 businesses and major employers include State Farm Insurance, BioWhittaker, Life Science Technologies and Medimmune.
