Why Kensington Could be Your Next Hometown
During the 1890s, Washington D.C. developer Brainard Warner planned to build a Victorian community on the area around the Rock Creek basin. Warner, inspired by a trip to London, then named the town Kensington Park; but, when the town was incorporated in the 1894 it was renamed Kensington. Kensington is situated on the Rock Creek basin, just northeast of Bethesda and southwest of Wheaton. The area was initially a summer retreat area for D.C. residents who wanted to avoid the District’s summer humidity. Today, the area is a commuter suburb, located just two miles from the Capital Beltway and serviced by buses, MARC trains and the nearby Rockville Metro station.
A major landmark in Kensington is the Washington DC Temple, which can be seen from I-495 on the Capital Beltway. Built in the 1960s and 1970s, the Washington DC Temple features six spires and is 288 feet in height.
