Why Silver Spring Could be Your Next Hometown
Silver Spring is an urbanized, bustling community whose name originates from a spring that had flakes of silver-colored metal compound called mica. The spring was discovered by Francis Preston Blair in 1840, and his estate was eventually built around it. By the 1930s, Silver Spring had one of the first shopping centers in the nation with a parking lot. Downtown Silver Spring has an abundance of office towers, shops and apartment communities.
The area is home to AT&T, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, Discovery Communications, and the American Film Institute's Silver Theatre and Culture Center. The Silver Theatre shows a number of American and Foreign Films. Silver Spring is also serviced by the Silver Spring Metro and MARC train stations.
