The actual town of Upper Marlboro is a very small--spanning 0.4 square miles and with a population of only 648 as of the 2000 US census. The US Census Bureau defines the Greater Upper Marlboro census designated place and Upper Marlboro the town as two separate entities.
Previously called Upper Marlborough, the name was shortened to Upper Marlboro and was established in 1706. The town was named after the First Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill, who was known for serving in the War of the Spanish Succession. During the 1700s, the residents were mainly merchants, lawyers and businessmen, and entertainment came in the form of horse racing. Upper Marlboro was known for being the "equestrian capital" of southern Maryland and remains the county seat for Prince George's County.
