Description

The state of Maryland has several nicknames such as The "Old Line State", "America In Miniature", and "Free State". The "Old Line State" nickname refers to the significance of the Maryland state line during the Revolutionary War. It was there where 400 brave soldiers from the Maryland Regiment fought against 10,000 British soldiers.

The nickname "America in Miniature" was given to Maryland because it has so much--culture and history--in one state. The "Free State" nickname came along when Congress prohibited the sale and use of alcohol in 1919. However, residents fought strongly against this ruling because they thought it violated the state's rights. "Free State" also refers to Maryland's tolerance of religions, freedom of speech and political rights.

Today, Maryland has about 50 forms of rivers, creeks and other bodies of water. The largest is the Chesapeake Bay, which flows up and down the eastern portion of the state into the heart of Annapolis and Baltimore. Since much of Maryland is coastlines, it's famous for fishing, boating and Maryland's Blue Crabs. Also, Ocean City, which lies on the southeastern side of the state, is a popular beach spot for Washingtonians, Northern Virginians and Marylanders.
