Description
Northern Virginia, also referred to as the "Old Dominion", is filled with historic cities, plantations and battlefields. Northern Virginia underwent many battles because of its proximity to the nation's capital. Most of the Civil War battles occurred in Virginia and it's no surprise that the state has a number of battlefield reenactments, museums and demonstrations. The Manassas area is famous for being the site of the Battle of Bull-Run while Fredericksburg is known to have endured through the Civil War.
Although Virginia is very historic in content, the state's slogan is "Virginia is for Lovers". The slogan originated in 1969. The Virginia State Travel Service wanted to adopt a slogan that would bring in tourism and during the age of hippies, had though it appropriate. However, today the slogan means many different things. Perhaps most discover that Virginia has a lot to offer with its mountain landscapes, beaches, cities and of course, history.
