Why Stafford County Could be Your Next Hometown
Stafford County is the second fastest growing county in Virginia and boasts one of the best school systems in the state. The county encompasses 277 square miles and lies about 40 miles south of the District of Columbia, which is on the "Capital Edge" - about halfway between Washington, DC and Richmond, Virginia. Stafford is bordered by the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers.
Two-thirds of Stafford is still forested, and there are more than 1,000 acres of county, regional, state and national parks. However, the northern part of the county is seeing more new residential growth.
Like many counties of Virginia, Stafford County is rich in history. Stafford County was named after the English County of Stafford and was founded in 1664. Due to its proximity to major cities such as Richmond and Fredericksburg, during the Civil War, troops had travelled and occupied parts of the county. Another major historic landmark is Marlborough Point, where Pocohontas was taken and brought to Jamestown.
Stafford County is also home to the Stafford Regional Airport and the Quantico Marine Corps Base.
