Originally known as Guilford, in the 1960s the area underwent improvement and was later called Sterling Park. The name was then shortened to Sterling. Sterling lies just northeast of Dulles International Airport with easy access to nearby Herndon and Reston.

Along with Herndon and Reston, Sterling has gone through massive growth since the completion of the Dulles Airport in 1962. The area today is diverse and a popular business and residential area. Shopping, dining and entertainment can be found nearby at the popular Dulles Town Center and Dulles Expo Center.
