Alexandria: Urban Amenities, Suburban Comfort All in One Place

One of Virginia’s greenest cities, Alexandria recycled over 20,000 tons of paper last year — enough to save nearly a quarter-million trees.

Alexandria, VA, with its 150,006 inhabitants (according to the 2009 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau) is a good-sized city in its own right. But when you factor in that it’s a part of the five million-plus residents in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, you begin to see that renting an apartment in Alexandria gives you access to just about anything anyone would need.

This is a very unique city whose origins, according to Visit, go all the way back to the Paleo-Indian period. Really. It was 13,000 years ago that a Native American hunter discarded his broken spear tip (today known as a Clovis point) on the southern edge of present-day Alexandria. In the thousands of years since, the city has grown into the kind of place where history is made every day.

Alexandria is famous for its historic Old Town district, a merry place filled with fabulous old buildings and lively shops, restaurants, nightlife, tours, museums and people. Though plenty of business is done here, the town boasts four stops on the WMATA Metrorail system for the convenience of those commuting to other parts in the metro area.

Alexandria is also known for its commitment to the environment. In 2009, the town was certified at the platinum level (the highest level for local governments) as part of the Virginia Municipal League’s Go Green Government Challenge. In fact, there is credible evidence that Alexandria is actually nice. No, I mean really nice, as last year it was named the nation’s most generous city by marketing firm Convio, which measured per capita online charity donations in cities with populations over 100,000.
