Annapolis, what a charming little town.

Right on the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis, considered America’s Sailing Capital, is home to the United States Naval Academy, as well as a sometimes-lively bar scene. Its downtown is filled with shops some people like to patronize, and of course, it being on the Bay, get ready for seafood and, especially in the summer, crabs. Yeah, there are plenty of restaurants in this place.

There’s also more area shopping in the form of Westfield Annapolis Shopping Mall, the Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole and, a bit further northwest, Arundel Mills (which now houses a casino if you’re really intent on wasting money). If you feel like watching live music, you can catch a show at Rams Head On Stage or the Whiskey.

Of course, it’s things to do in and around the mighty Chesapeake that sets Annapolis apart from most vacation locales. North America’s largest estuary is the setting for public cruises and Wednesday-night sailboat races (which generally occur between 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m.), and you yourself can charter a boat, rent a kayak, canoe, paddleboat or paddleboard and take to the water.

Yes, there are many types of things to do in Annapolis if you look hard enough.

If the apartment renter lives in Washington, D.C., and many of the readers of this blog probably do – all dozen or so of you – Annapolis is only 34.9 miles from city center, according to Google maps, a little cruise up U.S. Route 50.

You spend all year living and working in the hot, paved city. You deserve a watery break now and then. Take one in Annapolis.
