New Look Apartment: Paint Your Walls and Halls This Winter

Apartment painting

Roller derby: Latex paint is typically best for interior jobs. It goes on easily and dries relatively quickly. Oil-based paint provides a thicker, more resilient coating but can be smelly while drying. (PhylB via Flickr)

Painting. Painting can be a huge pain in the you-know-what, especially in the confines of an apartment. You want to talk about stress? Try fighting with a significant other or good friend while the paint is flying around, covered furniture poised to strike at every step.

And yes, it tends to get everywhere, especially when you use rollers. Anger, accusations, paranoia, no need to watch “The Young and the Restless;” painting with someone else has all that and more!

Before I hyperventilate, the reason for this post is to help you in your brush-and-spray quest, giving you helpful videos on how to go about the process.

First, of course, ask your landlord if it’s OK. One of mine knocked off some rent when I painted my apartment. Assuming you get the green light and want to pretty-up your abode, here are some nice videos that will get you prepping and painting with the best of them.

I found a really good New York City company called Brushed Interiors who’ve put up some good YouTube videos that cover everything from prepping to color choice. And if you opt for a sprayer, check this out.

Supplies. There are 11 Home Depots inside or right on the Beltway, including stores in Maryland, Virginia and one at 901 Rhode Island Avenue, N.E., in Washington, D.C. As you can see, for whatever reason, the Home Depot’s Store Finder is fixated on Colorado. (Maybe they’ve been taking advantage of a new law there and got stuck.) For those located in the capital region, just punch in your zip code to get the results you want.

On the Lowe’s side of the aisle, there are three stores hugging our circular expanse of paved misery and seven more within driving distance (and more farther away in places like Columbia and Glen Burnie). Again, just punch in your zip code to find a store near you.

I hope I’ve given you some good information to help your painting efforts – or dreams – along.
