Talk It Out: Dealing With Disagreeable Roommates

I’ve written what I know (and gleaned from various sources) about choosing a roommate on the site, and also how to avoid getting one in the first place.

This time I’ve decided to show you how to deal with certain personality types. I’ve found a pretty informative article, “5 Types of Roommates and How to Handle Them,” on HGTV FrontDoor – written by someone at TheRentalGirl.com – on how to do just that.

So if you’re renting an apartment in Dupont Circle and you’re unfortunate enough to be rooming with one of the following, or any combination thereof, read this and you’ll have a fighting chance of survival.

Here are the five types of roommates listed:

  1. The Inconsiderate Roommate.
  2. The Taker.
  3. The Hold and Explode Roommate (which they also label “passive aggressive”).
  4. The Irresponsible Roommate.
  5. The Entitled Roommate.

The article is full of practical advice, advice that doesn’t come from me so it might have a chance of working. There’s also a nice usage of tête-à-tête, though they need to finish it off with the proper accents.

You will have to read the article yourself: You are a horse; I lead you to water. But I will leave you with the upshot:

The most important thing in all situations is to remember this: What is normal to you may not be the case with others. So when looking for a housemate, invest time in choosing wisely and screen, baby, screen! Otherwise you will scream, baby, scream!
