H Street’s Big Board Offers Upscale Take on the Humble Hamburger
Want a hamburger? A real good hamburger? A slightly expensive hamburger?
According to an informative review from the Washington Post, which reads more like a feature story, the name of the restaurant is an allusion to the stock market, because the price of their draft beer fluctuates depending on how many are sold; and there are some pretty pricey names on their ticker (Old Dominion Oak Barrel Stout, Peroni Nastro Azzurro), though somehow Yuengling makes the cut.
Their website is something of a mismatch of neat pictures and graphics and 1998-style templates, and for a place as seemingly popular and hip as this, they really need to fix that.
But judging from their online fans, one thing The Big Board doesn’t need to fix is their burgers. Urbanspoon gives them a 97 percent rating, while Yelp.com lists them at a respectable 3.5 stars.
The site only features burgers, entrée salads, sides and beers, but they do have other types of grub; for this, they point you to their Facebook page.
Entrée salads go from $7.50 to $9, and sides from $4 to $7 (the $7 constituting sweet potato fries, which sure sound good).
Because the hours of operation are a bit scattered, look to their site for times, but generally, they’re open for dinner and lunch every day except Tuesday, when they only serve dinner. And they stay open until at least 2 a.m. every night, and close at 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Big Board features an open mic on Wednesday night, trivia (with prizes!) on Thursday, and they celebrate happy hour every day from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. ($1.50 off all drafts, $2 off wine). Come to think of it, they don’t list wines or cocktails on their site, either. But if you rent an apartment nearby and like hamburgers, you almost have to stop by sometime.
I’m going to leave you with Yelper Jessica G. of Washington, D.C., to let you know what you may be missing out on.
This is one of my favorite hole in the wall restaurants. Recently we had only been for brunch. Their chicken and waffles are AMAZING! Also their bottomless mimosas are only $10! Great deal, and they’re strong too. The other day we went for burgers for the first time and weren’t let down. Definitely one of the best burgers I’ve ever had! Great place!
