A few themes will be dominant in this year’s festival. Thrillers, Comedies, Social Justice Films, and Films on Music are a few of the unifying genres, while Films from Cuba bring a timely twist to a regional focus.

The opening film for the festival will be Australia’s The Dressmaker, starring Kate Winslet and Liam Hemsworth. The festival will close with Canada’s My Internship in Canada, a political satire starring Patrick Huard and Irdens Exantus.

With around 75 selections from 45 different countries, the festival’s offerings run from mainstream movies to arthouse films. Comedies, like Denmark’s Men & Chicken and the upcoming Austen adaptation Love & Friendship, sit alongside documentaries about Youtube star Samantha Montgomery (Presenting Princess Shaw) and Yitzhak Rabin (Rabin, The Last Day). Dramas from Iran (Nahid), France (My King), and Cuba (Behavior) tackle both the political and the personal, while some, like Niger’s musical comedy drawing inspiration from Prince’s Purple Rain, Akounak: Rain The Color of Blue With a Little Red In It defy categorization altogether.
