4 D.C. Pet Stores That Will Set Tails Wagging
Fido the dog and Clarinda the cat are important to you. So is Mort the guinea pig, and even Felix the rabbit.
Yes, they’re not just mere pets that take up space and add noise and hair to your Tenleytown apartment; they’re like your children, and you want the best for them. Lucky for you, the Washington, D.C., metro area boasts some mighty fine pet stores, and today we’ll focus on four independent ones. This list will keep your critter happy.
1. Planet Pet – Adams Morgan
Not your everyday pet store … in fact, it’s not your everyday anything. Along with being “Washington D.C.’s favorite all-natural pet food and supply store,” Planet Pet offers daycare/boarding that features “24-hour-a-day human and canine companionship in a cageless environment” with “certified dog handlers.” Can’t go wrong for your pooch or kitty here.

2. The Big Bad Woof – Near Takoma Metrorail Station
Located right on the border of the city and Takoma Park, Md., and right next to the Takoma Metrorail stop, The Big Bad Woof wins the best name prize. It might win the crunch-crunch award too, with verbiage on their website like “eco-friendly,” “organic” and “fair trade.” That’s one conscientious woofer. Food, toys and supplies for your small mammals you can feel good about.
3. Metro Mutts – H Street Corridor
With a name like that, how could it miss? According to the readers of Washington City Paper, who awarded Metro Mutts DC “Best Pet Shop 2012,” it doesn’t. Quite an honor. They won it with name-brand foods, delicious baked treats, toys and supplies, as well as dog walking and pet sitting services. There is a second store in Capitol Hill’s Barracks Row as well.
4. Doggy Style Bakery, Boutique & Pet Spa – Adams Morgan/Dupont Circle
One of the more salaciously-named pet stores anywhere, Doggy Style Bakery, Boutique & Pet Spa is nonetheless popular with the cognoscenti as evinced by their four-star rating on Yelp.com. Just in case, keep one eye closed when you walk into the … uhm … establishment. Yes, like the name says, they offer natural and organic foods, treats, supplies, toys and grooming. Despite the name, there’s cat stuff here too. A special bonus: Across the street is City Dogs, who’ll both walk and provide daycare for your pooch.
