Everyone’s heard of Blackfish and Making a Murderer, but there are lots of other great documentaries on Netflix to watch. (Although if you haven’t seen those go watch now!) Listed below are some of my favorites.

Planet Earth

Planet Earth was wildly popular when it first came out, winning many awards, but lots of people don’t realize the entire series is on Netflix. Whether you’re interested in oceans or deserts, this series is the perfect way to explore and learn about our wonderful world. Plus, re-watching will get you ready for the much anticipated sequel coming out later this year!

The Champions

When Michael Vick was arrested for dogfighting in 2007 everyone followed what happened to him, but what happened to his dogs? The Champions tells the story of those pit bulls who were rescued from his dog fighting ring. If you’re looking for an uplifting film about love, compassion, and second chances then this is the documentary for you.

Living On One Dollar

In 2012, four college students decided to spend their summer in rural Guatemala living on only $1 a day to try and get a better understanding of how over a billion people live everyday. Their goal was not to guilt people, but inspire them to get involved in helping to end global poverty. Make sure to check out their amazing journey.

The Sixties

If you’re a fan of recent history then check out this CNN’s miniseries. Throughout 10 episodes it covers the music, politics, and technology of one of the most disruptive and interesting time periods in US history. And if you find you like this, there’s one about the seventies as well.

Girl Rising

Girl Rising is a global campaign that works to break the cycle of poverty by educating girls, and it all started with this film. The documentary profiles 9 girls in the developing world to show the impact and importance of female education. After watching this film you’ll surely be inspired to get involved and the website shows you how.

Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory

Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music and Memory, fights to show that music has the ability to combat memory loss and help those suffering from it find meaning in life again. This deeply touching film truly shows the healing power of music.

On March 8th, 1971, eight people broke into an FBI office in Pennsylvania and took all the files. They shared them with the public and exposed many FBI secrets, but were never found. For the first time ever those who participated have come forward, and this film has the groundbreaking interviews.

Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight For Freedom

The Ukraine has been in the news often over the past few years as their fight for freedom from Russia has raged. This documentary shows and explains how these protests began and what followed in the Ukraine in 2013 and 2014. If you want to know more about this historic event than you hear from the soundbites on the news then watch this.

30 for 30: The Price of Gold

30 for 30 is a series of sports documentaries that are all fantastic (and many are on Netflix). One of the best, though, is this one, about Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding. Everyone’s heard the story of the brutal beating but this film goes in depth on the why behind that horrible day.

So the next time your apartment is having a movie night make sure you consider one of these!
