Cavaliers in the Sweet 16 for the First Time Since 1995

Virginia Cavaliers cheerleaders

This is madness: Get out to the Arlington Rooftop Bar and cheer for your Cavaliers. (brandonink2001 via Flickr)

They’re not exactly in the metro area, but because the University of Virginia is not too far away, The Washington Post lists them as local (it could have something to do with the fact that UVA is the state’s flagship public university, one of the top such schools in the nation, and was founded by Thomas Jefferson).

And because of all this, and the fact they have such a healthy alumni presence in the area, the blog has decided to pull for these Virginia Cavaliers, who for so many seasons were blah-to-decent-to-good, but not good enough to make much noise in the NCAA men’s basketball championship tournament.

Now is the time for them to make a serious run at the title.

A 28-6 record, and more importantly, a regular season ACC title and ACC tourney crown earned the Hoos a No. 1 seed in the East Region of the Big Dance. After a bit of a scare in the first round against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (how about that, the Cavaliers having problems with the Chanticleers), Virginia treated the Memphis Tigers like a practice squad. Next, they get perennial powerhouse and 4th-seeded Michigan State on Friday night in the Sweet 16.

The place to watch the game in the region would have to be the Arlington Rooftop Bar & Grill in the county’s Courthouse neighborhood, which will be packed with both alumni and plain old Cavaliers fans alike, cheering on a team that was last in the round of 16 in 1995.

The tip-off is slated for 9:57 p.m. on TBS. The Hoos have never won it all, even when they had Ralph Sampson, one of the greatest college basketball players of all time (who never panned out in the pros).

Let’s see how far this Virginia team can make it. They have just as good a chance as anyone else.

So if you rent an apartment in the area and want to be surrounded by a fierce-but-friendly phalanx of orange, jump on the Metro’s Orange Line, get off at the Court House station, waddle on up to Arlington Rooftop Bar & Grill and have a ball.

Already live in this great neighborhood? Even better.
