Apartment Living in Damascus: No Need to Leave the Urban Too Far Behind

A sign offering hayrides.

The Damascus Community Fair offers rural fun for the whole family.

If you haven’t heard of Damascus, MD, it’s a small town in the northern corner of Montgomery County.

Apartment renters in Damascus will enjoy being away from it all, but still are close enough to commute to the city for work and play. And with Damascus, the proper term would be cities, as you’re in a unique geographic area where commuting to Washington, D.C., (about 25 miles), Baltimore (30-plus miles), and Frederick (15 or so miles) are all within reason.

Here are a few things you may not know about Damascus, MD:

  • It’s somewhat famous for its high school athletics.
Growing up I’d heard of Damascus High School even though I lived in a different metro region. They even have an impressive feeder league for their high school sports program.
  • Two words: Free Hayrides
If you rent an apartment in Damascus, and love country fairs, consider yourself lucky, as you can celebrate the 65th Damascus Community Fair from September 10-12. You can relax with a free hayride, watch the tractor pulls, and partake in other fair-like fun (funnel cake and deep-fried pickles, anyone?).
  • You may meet some outdoorsy-types
There are plenty of unfettered natural landscapes to hike and generally mosey around in, including Damascus Regional Park.
  • There’s a Local Celebrity Factor: Miss Maryland USA 2008
If you are into beauty pageants, maybe you already know that Casandra Tressler is a Damascus native.
