Furnishing a Kid-Friendly Condo in Arlington
Clients are always cautious when it comes to buying new furniture if there are kids or pets in the household.
Kyle and Maryline had the same concerns when they came to me at Ethan Allen to furnish their new condo in Arlington, Va. They were expecting a baby boy and knew that their furniture needed to be durable in order to keep up with the new addition to their family.
As a designer, I’m always excited to see clients go through the design process for the first time, and I was lucky enough to help them start from scratch as they were getting rid of all of their existing pieces.
We went through quite a few inspirational pictures before they found the one that clearly defined their sense of style. It showcased soft textures with very neutral grays throughout, and I wanted to incorporate this soothing, monochromatic look while also keeping the baby in mind.
We started with Cypress Gray, a brand new fabric that is easily cleaned with water and shampoo. It is not completely baby-proof but definitely allows for spot cleaning if there are ever any accidents.
We then chose a navy velvet fabric for pillows, which added a soft texture and a bold color to the sofa and loveseat. The condo has a very open floor plan, which connects the living room, dining room and nursery, so blues worked perfectly as our accent color and harmonized the space as a whole. We also chose the gray Desmond rug and gray ikat accent pillows to soften the space and keep it very neutral.
The dining room chairs were a great place to introduce a little pattern into the design. We used a beautiful indoor/outdoor fabric made by Sunbrella that works great in a room where food and drinks may be spilled. This same fabric was used on an ottoman for the living room, and it ties the two spaces together so nicely.

We also had a custom area rug made for the dining room. This rug is made from a Stainmaster material and will hold up to anything that baby Jack might throw at it!
Kyle and Maryline also needed their nursery to function as a guest room, so we decided to use a Triad, queen-size sleeper sofa there. We chose a dark blue fabric to separate it from the powder blue walls but also maintain a constant accent color throughout the condo. The pillows add a playful pattern, perfect for a nursery yet also versatile should they want to use them in another room down the road!
I had such fun working with this family and absolutely love the way the design turned out. Kyle and Maryline were thrilled to have everything arrive before the baby was born and to have help from a designer with Ethan Allen’s complimentary design service!
